AEO
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Search is shifting from a list of links to a single, synthesized answer. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you make sure your brand is the source that answer is built from.

A simple definition
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content and data so answer engines — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and voice assistants — can extract a clear, accurate answer and attribute it to you. Instead of chasing a ranked link, you optimize to be the answer.
In practice that means question-first pages, concise 40–60 word direct answers, clean structured data, and an unambiguous, well-corroborated brand entity.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
These three overlap on fundamentals but aim at different outcomes:
- SEO — optimize to rank as a blue link on a results page.
- AEO — optimize to be the extracted answer in features like AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice results.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — optimize to be cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
You don't pick one. Strong SEO is the foundation; AEO and GEO are how you stay visible as the interface becomes an answer instead of a list.
Why AEO matters in 2026
A growing share of searches now end without a click — the user reads the AI answer and moves on. If your brand isn't the cited source in that answer, you're effectively invisible for that query, no matter how well you rank in the traditional results below it.
AI systems decide who to cite based on entity clarity, citation consistency across the web, crawlability and topical authority. AEO is the discipline of getting all four right.
How to optimize for answer engines
- Write question-first. Use real questions as H2s and answer them in the first 40–60 words, then expand.
- Add structured data. FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization and Service schema make your facts machine-readable.
- Be crawlable by AI. Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot, and publish an
llms.txt. - Get indexed by Bing. ChatGPT's search leans on Bing — submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, not just Google.
- Build your entity. Consistent name/address/phone, plus presence on review sites, directories and Wikidata, so AI treats you as one trustworthy entity.
How to get cited by ChatGPT
Three things, in order: get indexed by Bing; publish clear, factual, question-answering content with structured data; and build corroborating signals (reviews, directories, mentions) so the model treats your brand as consistent and trustworthy. Freshness helps too — Perplexity can pick up new content in 1–2 weeks, while ChatGPT's indexation typically lags 4–8 weeks.
